All American…From Another Place

There’s a reason most successful companies in the U.S. are dominated by immigrants, where they came from a business can be stated only with a bribe, and if continued success, profits may be repressed too, with more bribes. In the U.S., a start-up can be successful with a good idea and investors pouring funds in without taking any out until profits can be realized all around. The technology industry in the U.S., are mostly headed by first and second generation immigrants, who upon arrival ascertained this is a good place to make a go of it, and made a go of it they did, in Silicon Valley, ever hear of it? In case you think the success of Silicon Valley is some sort of myth, ever hear of Hollywood, I mean old Hollywood, invented by and first run by immigrants, like all new immigrants in the U.S. they saw an opportunity and took the plunge. The movies made by immigrants display Americana culture better than a native born ever could, they appreciate the genre and all its red, white and blue expressions through and through. Ask any immigrant what it means to be an American, I just hope you have a couple of hours to spare as it’s explained to you, ask a native the same question, the reply may be, I just happen to be born here.

More…ever hear of Henry Ford, second generation immigrant, did not invent the automobile nor the assembly line but made it his own with an eye that only an immigrant seems to have. There are over a million stores of immigrants that made it big in the U.S. and will keep doing so if we allow them to do their good works here and not abroad…to be continued…

Cherise the Nurse in Harbor

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she

With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

The New Colossus, Emma Lazarus, 2 November 1883, source, national park service…

I picture ‘Lady Liberty’, stepping down from her pedestal being uncomfortable and unable to continue standing there representing the true ideals expressed on the plaque at the base of her plinth, can no longer in good conscience direct refugees to par take of the generous open liberty once offered and so available but has now been tarnished by an executive order in the dirty hands of rank amateur without the total regard for the words so inscribed. She has let it be known, however, will gladly return to duty when in the eyes of the people, truth and justice and above all, liberty, has been resorted to all comers, both new and old alike, in the guise of refugeeism that has served the nation so well since its founding and will continue to do so forever more…

Sanctum

A sanctuary, in its original meaning, is a sacred place, such as a shrine. By the use of such places as a haven, by extension the term has come to be used for any place of safety. This secondary use can be categorized into human sanctuary, a safe place for humans, such as a political sanctuary; and non-human sanctuary, such as an animal or plant sanctuary. MIAMI — President Trump is hailing the first victory in his fight against “sanctuary cities” after a South Florida mayor ordered his employees on Thursday to begin working more closely with federal immigration authorities. USA Today…

Almost every immigrant neighborhood in the U.S. is ripe to be preyed upon, it’s kinda of a closed society, it’s possible for both the legal and illegal residents to have a deep-rooted fear of all things government, men in uniform, with guns.

So, they are easy victims for some members of their culture as well as outside organized criminals to target them with protection schemes, sell them black market goods and services with exorbitant fees, engage in strong arm tactics, knowing full well that few would dare report them, because of their lack of understanding of their rights, their built-in fear of the law. The first few years or so some first-generation immigrants seldom leave the neighborhood, can live, shop and work, all within its borders, some never even learning English, it’s the second and third generations that populate the outer fringes, become employed and succeeding in the general population of the city. It’s in neighborhoods like the above that the word ‘sanctuary’ has its true meaning, cause and effect, with some form of sanctuary, the fear of the law is greatly diminished, a crime can be reported without fear of being deported if illegal or is related to illegals, good citizenship is the prime motivation. Without the protection of sanctuary, a contagious illness (diseases) can go untreated and reported placing an entire city and state in danger simply because of one’s immigration status.

All over the U.S. some big city mayors are taking a stand against the Presidents executive order by protecting its inhabitants, both legal and illegal, or anyone without proper documentation from the threat of deportation, by not collecting such status information of its local law abiding citizens. Who are now free without fear to report crime and seek medical attention when ill all for the greater good of the city, state and the nation …Not since the early days of the civil war have the nation seen such a negative response to any branch of the federal government…

Play It Again, Sam…

Dialogue dubbing of movies as far as I’m concerned was in its heyday during the 1950’s up to and including the late 1960’s, when what are now considered classic ‘foreign’ movies, I’m sure a few comes to your mind, foreign only in the United States, not to the rest of the world, in Europe where almost everyone is multilingual to some extent, in the U.S. not so much, where movies from France and Italy, I site as examples, the French new wave movement, coupled with the neorealism of Italian film making are the best. I raise the above points only to note that dubbed classic movies are no longer available that was once played on American television with some regularity on Sunday and Saturday late nights as foreign flim festivals, which is how I got to know them, oh, yes they were also played in down town so called art houses, catering to the fringe taste of movie lovers or the avant-garde communities. Such films are still available but with subtitles which I hate, trying to read the actors emotions on their faces and at the same time read the dialogue at the bottom of the screen is just too trying for me, out of which grow my loathing I guess of news crawls. And oh, yes, the English are deserving of an honorary mention here too, the series of ‘Carry On’… movies and more, that are even today live up to a carefree, lighthearted experience for ever and ever with rounds of belly laughs that continue long after the movie has stopped playing…

How Far, Too Far, How Long, Too Long

The Mary Tyler Moore Show is once again being celebrated all over again with the death of its star and namesake, Mary Tyler Moore, as being the intermediary of a women’s javelin in the observance of equal rights (movement) for women when it was in its infancy. The show was ahead of its time and the nation in exploring such issues on television as equal pay for women, drug addiction (sleeping pills), pre-marital sex, a man hungry woman, even homosexuality, a single woman living alone with a career, never married and dating a few men, how shocking for the 1970’s, in real-life, not so much, on television, defiantly a yes. So, one would have thought that the CBS Television Network in its homage to this ground breaking television show would have done just a little better then choosing a sixty-two-year-old woman presenter wearing a straight hair wig without any gray to lead the parade, that in of its self confirms that women on television, are just pretty-little things, still have a long way to go, especially women of a certain ethnicity.

The EPA, The Peoples Best Friend

The massive fines paid by Volkswagen AG and criminal indictment of seven executives are a “very strong deterrent” to cheating by other automakers, a senior career Environmental Protection Agency official said on Wednesday.

Christopher Grundler, director of EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality, told reporters after remarks to a meeting of automotive engineers in Washington that the penalties have had a big impact. David Shepardson, Reuters…

The United States Environmental Protection Agency is an agency of the Federal government of the United States which was created for protecting human health and the environment by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress. The EPA was proposed by President Richard Nixon and began operation on December 2, 1970. Source, Wikipedia…

In view of the above its hard not to think of the EPA as being not a friend, but a very special friend to the American people, when so much of their needs, health and wellbeing are protected by this organization, for just a few examples; air, water, land, hazardous waste, and the current king of all, global warming. It’s unthinkable in my view that any administration would think of interfering or even curtailing the good works of this governmental agency even in a small way, without which the health of the nation is so dependent, deserves the distain of its people.

Is there a clean-up site anywhere near where you live, ordered by the EPA, because some business did not want to incurred the expense of cleaning up after its self, it’s the EPA that made them do so after the fact, before if it had known? If Richard Nixon had not envisioned it in the 1970’s, someone would have done so today, the need for environmental regulation is stronger today than it ever was…’On a clear day one can see forever’, let us hope that continues far into the future…Now take a deep breath and relax, I got this…

It Came From an Immigrant

The birthrate of most western countries is falling and has been doing so for the last ten years or so at an ever-increasing rate, at the same time failing employment opportunities have been blamed on immigrants, migrants if you will, when the true job killer is technology, robotic technology, to be more exacting. Without a vigorous immigrant population to stimulate growth and innovation a society will wilt, as if attacked by a fungus and die on the vine. Brexit like policies is not only a job killer but a country killer as well. Most new ideas come from the outside in rarely from the inside out. Ask anyone as to why something is done a certain way and the answer will most likely be, that’s the way it’s always been done, until an outsider, observes the situation and offers something totally new, why not try doing it this way, something no one had ever thought of before and if the new idea is not fully adopted there is a good chance that a new tweak on an old idea will be an improvement, new eyes looking at an old job, is progress and it can come from a immigrant…
