The Way You Look

If you are a female news contributor, before sitting down in the make-up chair, what look are you hoping will be achieved before air time? Are you hoping for the teacher-instructor or professional-lecturer manifestation, is your aim to open the mind of the viewer to strategic thinking based on the stories you report? Will your appearance be a distraction or an enhancement to the story? Will the viewer have to process your appearance before giving your presentation consideration, what about after, will your presentation linger or your appearance? Yesterday I watched a female reporter do a stand-up outside a municipal building, the details of which has left my recalled thoughts, however, I can still remember her greasy red lips like it was just an hour ago. It’s not that I wanted to memorize any part of her physical being, it was purely unintentional, like for some unknown reason one remembers a radio jingle heard for the first time. How much make-up is too much? When you can see it and remember it. When television was in its infancy, make-up was applied to the face to make people look normal under the then primitive black and white cameras and hot lights, today it seems the aim appears to be more appetition, as in burlesque. Last year a student demonstrating on behalf of TheDream.US for undocumented immigrant youth was so articulate was invited the next day for an extended interview in the studio. The producers took a very young wholesome looking teen altered her appearance to a caricature of a drag queen and destroyed her creditability as a spokesperson for the National Scholarship Fund for DREAMers…Yes Virginia appearance is not only something its everything

Free To Travel

You live in the continental United States, what if to travel from state to state you were compelled to show some sort of documental proof of your home state residency, or have to exchange currency, or deal with a rate of exchange on purchased goods and services, these are just a few of the obstacles that were in place comprising twenty-six European countries on Continental Europe or main land Europe or the Continent, before the Schengen Agreement. This agreement since about 1995 gradually abolished border checks between countries (states) just like the continental United States. Regrettably, this one harden progressive agreement thanks to recent influx of emigrational peoples is in danger of being soften into a kind of sliding scale to discourage people traveling between countries. ‘Let me see your papers’ can now be heard at some border crossings sites for the first time since WW2. The Schengen Agreement operated prior to 1999 operated independently outside of the European Union did allow the United Kingdom and Ireland to opt out. There was once a time when any asylum seeker after reaching the continent was free to roam sort of from country to country without anxiety, now are being asked to carry ID cards with picture and finger print and a declaration of European country and home country as well. These hinderers are being greeted with a mixed bag, glad by some as observable controls on movement of peoples and yet don’t like to have to proclaim that they are indeed native European like in the old not so good old days…

To Live By

“It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” ― Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl

No individual is 100% anything, even the most despicable in history possess one or two traits to be celebrated, the phrase, ‘Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater’, comes to mind so very often. More to the point, don’t reject the essential along with the inessential.

This Is Real Life

When you hear or think of the colloquial term Mom and Pop, what thoughts come to mind? If you live in a small town, it probably means a kind of aw-shucks general store with an old wood stove in the rear were town folks gather around to gossip. Or if like me raised in The Bronx, New York, it could mean a grocery store across the street stocked with everyday food stuffs like milk, bread, cold cuts, soda and beer. The place where everyone knows your name, your brother, sister and parents too. Where if cash strapped anyone in the neighborhood could ‘sign-in’ a book of account for a few items until a payday. My Mom and Pop store or one like it has been at its location for generations, offering personal services like nowhere else in any kind of ongoing business. Which is why the news that some Walmart Express Stores where closing its doors after driving the local Mom and Pop general stores out of business leaving some communities without any convent stores at all. When Walmart opened these stores it provided employment for far more people than the one or two afterschool positions that were once available. When Walmart Stores came to town it was predicted it would kill off all the Mom and Pop stores, it did, now that they are leaving, there is a vacant void that no one has the funds to fill, in short they killed the downtown too, as there is no real reason to come to visit the area, there is nothing there, it has become a ghost town like those seen in the movies, except this is real life…

Should the personal property of a refugee be seized in payment for their upkeep? I hope not. It would be a sad sight to behold authorities searching asylum seekers person for valuables to be used as the price of entry. I would want whatever small assets a refugee is able to carry into exile will surely be needed in due course to help establish a beachhead in the newly entered country, to seize such property before hand is to leave the refugee without any operating options from the very beginning of what is hopped will be a short stay and if longer an enabling one. This story is currently in the news because Denmark is considering just such a practice as a means of discouragement of future asylum seekers, ‘don’t come to Denmark’, and I may add you will be robbed upon entry. The Danish ministry is moving to justify the increased cost of maintaining refugee families in schools and government sponsored healthcare programs. Few could blame the ministry, it’s just that such a venture leaves a sour taste in the mouths of observers of a time when Nazi’s confiscated property and pulled the gold fillings from the interned and murdered as payment for their deliverance from life. Nordic countries have always been considered one of the most compassionate and genuine in its humanitarianism toward refugees, however, with the current rage of overwhelming numbers even they may be finding their limit, let us hope the rest of the world has not yet reached such a plateau…

AJAM

News that Al Jazzera America is closing its doors in April 2016 is sad news for me as I liked the diversity it represented in the cable news sphere of influence, while I activity campaigned for its inclusion in the market place in 2013, never watched it after seeing it displayed a news crawl, hate news crawls…Getting into the weeds, AJAM never looked any different from any current cable news channel at the time of launch or even today. For me the appeal of AJAM in 2013 was its Qatari roots with a perceived insight into the Arab spring and other stories coming out of the region, who among all available cable news outlets would know better. Why would anyone choose to watch AJAM over other cable news outlets is a little like how some approach a physical newsstand, picking up the publication with the loudest headline or is closest at hand. Looking back, its Qatari pedigrees may have been a hindrance from the start that it could never overcome, meaning any Pan Arabism by association in the west is seen in the negative. Every story can be argued as appearing bias, when it’s not, but prejudices will always rule the day without any logistical considerations, it’s just the way of the world in everything we do or say or think…

The Ugly Season

I am not a sports fan, but after spending hundreds of dollars to view a game at a stadium, then for a fight to break out among the players, me along with the other spectators cheering with excitement, at the farce… upon arriving at home, thinking a fight is not what I wanted to pay for, is how I am beginning to feel about this current political season. Every four years I look forward with great anticipation the glories give and take of a cross fired inspirational political campaign, with a little mud, but not too much, but months away from any actual voting in an election, I am already asking for my money back, or at the very least a better splash guard. I did expect to spend a little time commenting on outrages hair colors and greasy lips on some female news contributors and male dyed hair, or the wearing of a toupee reasoning they are not effective on television without the falsehood, and just maybe some trivial amount of trash talk, but electing a President should be more about ideas, the management of affaires and procedures, not about trashing candidates on trifle subjects that will only be remembered and quoted in history books as a vile comment on these times in which we now find ourselves living in. Let’s compare on television an academic lecture on a life or death situation, a TED talk if you well, and one on whose life partner is sleeping with another, which one will get the large audience numbers, no contest here. Eat your veggie burger it’s good for you while you would rather have an ice cream sundae with extra nuts, this is just what is involved, the nuts, when embarking on a presidential campaign, as an elector or candidate…garbage in garbage out…
