Too Soon?

All over the world there is little evidence of aboriginal or indigenous if you prefer, people who occupied a landmass for centuries and left so small of a footprint upon the land one would be hard pressed to find perceptible evidence of their tangible existence. Manhattan Island, ‘Historically documented to have been purchased by Dutch colonists from Native Americans in 1626 for the equivalent of US$24’, (according to Wikipedia). Upon learning of the purchase modern people seem to bring on a laugh track and how the Native Americans were swindled, not so when it is understood that in the culture of most indigenous people, land cannot be owned that it belongs to The Great Spirit, Heavenly Father or Deity and was created for use and not ownership. In the eyes of Native Americans they swindled the colonists, like selling the Brooklyn Bridge today, and that has been done in these modern times. But the point of this post is to note how little damage to the environment was left by the most primitive of peoples after centuries of use, living on and with mother earth and the continuing damage being done by the enlighten advance of modern civilization today. I fear that the aim of space travel will change from total exploration to urgent emigration. The air and water is being defiled as manufacturing continues on the cheap because to do otherwise is too expensive. I’m told I must stop here as my blood pressure has hit the outer limits of good health…more in a later post…

Logocentrism

Reporting on a huge snow fall one local television station suffered ‘logocentrism’ of which there is no known cure. The station logo appeared on the cap, jacket, mike and screen all at the same time, in the same frame. One would have thought NASCAR culture had been deployed to one local news station in New Jersey, threatening to spread to other news stations in the area before being eradicated by a forward looking News Director, exercising the power of vision able to anticipate the future before its time…

Is it News or Something Else?

In newspaper tabloid parlance there is a saying. ‘If it bleeds it leads’, meaning the story has a high probability of gory front page pictures or stimulatory headlines of same. In television news parlance it’s somewhat tame in that you are warned with ‘viewer discretion is advised’, meaning it’s gory or can be emotionally disturbing (upsetting) but not so much, however, children should leave the viewing area. The warning is only in play for the first five days or so then it’s placed on a loop and played without the warning with every connecting story. In the last few months I have lost count the number of people seen (filmed) killed on camera. My new fear is of the familiar, the acceptable of such scenes becoming the new normal of television news tabloidism…

Thank You HBO and a Few Others…

I have grown to pity most television actors today who find themselves deep into an emotional dialogue that have to compete with an on-screen logo which seem to cry out ‘look at me’ not that actor trying to win your attention. Then there is HBO and all is forgiven for a brief bit of time as the drama unfolds in our hearts and minds…
